Whittle, who plays Calvin Valentine, was taking part in a charity match between the soap's cast and benefits company Capita when the incident happened.
Shane Rundle told Portsmouth's The News: "I went for the ball and went straight into him, flew up in the air and landed really badly on my leg, then my head.
"My friends and family in the crowd said they actually heard a crack as my leg broke. I was screaming in agony at first because my body was in shock."
Whittle has repeatedly phoned Rundle at the Queen Alexandra Hospital to check his recovery progress.
"It was nice of him to call," said the benefits officer. "He said he'd had a similar accident a few years before so he knew what I was going through."
Rundle was awarded the Most Improved Player trophy by his manager after the game, but admitted he couldn't see himself playing football again "any time soon".
