One of Hollyoaks' youngest characters will attempt to take their own life in an upcoming shock storyline twist.

Schizophrenic student Newt - played by 18-year-old Nico Mirallegro - makes a shock suicide pact at an abandoned warehouse with his newfound female friend Rae (Alice Barlow), who he meets while on the run.

Believing that he'd be framed for Gaz's (Joel Goonan) attack, a mentally unstable Newt fled the area with his imaginary friend Eli (Marc Silcock) who returned when he stopped taking his medication.

Eli's influence causes Newt to steal a purse from an old lady and their attempt to hide leads them to a derelict warehouse. There, Newt spots Rae on a high ledge about to jump. Managing to coax her down, Newt's delighted with his new friend.

Eli, however, is infuriated by Newt's blossoming relationship with Rae and steps up his mission to erase her from his life. As Newt struggles to cope with Eli's controlling nature, Rae claims that she never wants to return home and the pair forge a suicide pact.

Climbing to the top of the warehouse, Newt and Rae share a moment and prepare to throw themselves into the cold dockland water below.

A Hollyoaks source told DS: "Newt's at breaking point and Rae gives him a way out - a way to rid himself of Eli forever."

They added: "Lauren receives a 'goodbye' text from Newt, causing her and Jack to race to the scene in the hope of stopping him. But will they get there in time?"

The storyline will unfold on screen from Monday, October 5. Get the Inside Soap magazine on your iPhone or iPad
