Hollyoaks stars performed their own stunts as they filmed dramatic scenes for the soap's new suicide plotline.

Viewers will see schizophrenic student Newt attempting to take his own life this week after making a pact with his new friend Rae (Alice Barlow).

Newt has been spending time with Rae at an abandoned warehouse after going on the run. In Friday's episode, which was filmed on location at Stanley Dock in Liverpool, he will jump from the top of the building into the water below.

Hollyoaks' series producer Lucy Allan told the Liverpool Daily Post: "The team did a brilliant job at constructing a 45ft tower at Stanley Dock for the main stunt.

"We had stunt doubles there if the actors felt they did not want to do it. But they are a tenacious bunch and they wanted to do it all themselves. They even stayed underwater for three or four minutes for the big underwater sequence, filmed in Fleetwood."

The episode in question features a race against time as Lauren Valentine (Dominique Jackson) and Jack Osborne (Jimmy McKenna) try to intervene before Newt goes ahead with his plan. Get the Inside Soap magazine on your iPhone or iPad
