The actor, who plays Malachy Fisher in the Channel 4 teen drama, told DS that he was in New York when he heard about producers' plans to create a special instalment set six months in the future.
Discussing his initial thoughts about the surprise twist, Wallace confessed: "My actual feeling was that I was gutted because I had to fly back from New York to film the episode! I've had a year's worth of training for the New York Marathon and I'd planned a holiday around it.
"The guys upstairs phoned me and asked if I'd amend my holidays to shoot the secret episode! Nobody knew about it and I was gutted because I'd had the New York trip planned for a year! I flew back and when I read the script, though, I was definitely up for it!"
The one-off episode sees show favourite Calvin Valentine, played by Ricky Whittle, shot dead on the day of his second wedding to Carmel McQueen (Gemma Merna), sparking a six-month long whodunit mystery.
Wallace added: "It's a really ambitious move. It's one of those ones where it can work really, really well or it doesn't. There's no in-between with these kind of episodes and for us to be trying this, it's fantastic. The episode itself is just brilliant."
Hollyoaks bosses came up with the plotline after Whittle decided to leave the programme in order to pursue roles in the US.
