Phina Oruche has revealed that she was "elated" when she became Hollyoaks producer Paul Marquess's first signing for the soap.

The actress was cast in the role of Gabby Sharpe earlier this year as Marquess began the process of revamping the teen drama following his appointment in January.

Speaking to DS about the moment she was approached, Oruche remarked: "[Was I] flattered? That doesn't even say it! I was bowled over, excited, a little scared, elated... come on - it's such an honour. If someone has decided that as their stamp, the first person they bring in it's just an honour."

Asked how she feels about being part of the programme's relaunch, she replied: "I'm delighted. Excited beyond belief. It's great for me because it's like my relaunch as well. I went off and became a married baby-mama and all of that. It's my relaunch. I put my career on the backburner so it's perfect timing for me."

The 37-year-old makes her debut as married mum-of-two Gabby in tonight's episode of Hollyoaks. In the coming weeks, she and the rest of the Sharpe clan will become permanent fixtures in the show.

Oruche has previously played Liberty Baker in Footballers' Wives. Her other credits include The Bill, Nip/Tuck and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
