Anthony Quinlan has revealed the "intense" scenes he recorded as part of Hollyoaks' big fire storyline.

Quinlan, who plays newlywed Gilly, said that filming the dramatic footage, which sees him attempt to rescue some of Chester's most well-known characters from the flats above Il Gnosh with wife Steph (Carley Stenson), was dauntingly realistic.

He told Inside Soap: "It was intense. It seems very real when the ten-inch flames are right in your face!

"I carried a ladder past the burning building, which doesn't seem like a massive stunt - but I was very manly about it all."

Friday will see some of the village's residents fall victim to the explosion, prompting speculation that terminally ill Steph may perish at the hands of the fire.

Hollyoaks can be seen weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4.
