The 24-year-old, who plays Chez Chez barman Ste Hay on the Channel 4 soap, admitted that he would like to see Cooper secure more recognition for her portrayal of tough Jacqui McQueen.
In an interview with the Inside Soap Yearbook 2011, Richardson was asked to name the "unsung hero" of the Hollyoaks cast.
He replied: "Claire Cooper. Jacqui is one of my favourite characters and the way Claire plays her is amazing. She's so different from Jacqui in real life.
"She hardly ever gets nominated for awards, so I wish other people could see how great she is."
Richardson also backed Hollyoaks' series producer Paul Marquess, who has been heading up a major revamp of the programme since his arrival in January.
He said: "The show's starting a new era, and I'd just like to thank our new producer Paul Marquess for making me a part of it. He told me he loved everything I've been doing and wanted to keep me on. I'm hoping to stick with the show no matter what."
Richardson is currently involved in a gritty domestic violence storyline which has seen Ste endure beatings from his secret lover Brendan Brady (Emmett Scanlan). Get the Inside Soap magazine on your iPhone or iPad
