The latest surprise moment to be included in the teen soap saw McQueen matriarch Myra (Nicole Barber-Lane) acknowledge Tuesday's news that Prince William is to marry his long-term partner Kate Middleton.
Returning home to a heated row taking place in her living room, Myra commented: "I've been to half the shops in Chester! They were all banging on about that royal wedding!"
A show source told DS this evening: "Hollyoaks has always strived to be a soap that is relevant to its audience and so bosses decided that it was only fitting to reflect this national talking point on screen."
Myra's line - filmed within the past couple of days - formed part of a special episode which focused on Malachy Fisher's loved ones in the aftermath of his tragic death. As Mercedes (Jennifer Metcalfe), Cheryl (Bronagh Waugh) and Lynsey (Karen Hassan) dealt with his loss, tempers frayed and secrets emerged.
Producers had not publicised details of the episode - set entirely in the McQueen house - in a bid to keep its contents a surprise for viewers.
A number of other unpublicised surprises have been slotted into Hollyoaks in recent weeks, including bonus scenes featuring returnees Warren Fox (Jamie Lomas) and Mandy Richardson (Sarah Jayne Dunn).
The Hollyoaks insider added: "We're really pleased with the response to the fire episodes and Warren's return and in the age of spoilers being so readily available, it's great that we've been able to provide some real surprises for the viewers."
The special episode gets its Channel 4 airing tomorrow in the soap's usual 6.30pm slot.
