The actress, who plays Cheryl Brady in the Channel 4 soap, praised the arrival of Brendan's (Emmett J Scanlan) son Declan (Jay Duffy) as an important step towards going deeper into their back story.
"I think you have to do that with Brendan's character - you have got to explore the other aspects to him and hopefully in the next year, we will explore more avenues to do with the Bradys and what made the family the way are they are. It is really interesting," Waugh told PA.
Duffy's father is Coronation Street actor Keith, and the Boyzone star has visited the Hollyoaks set several times to support his son.
"Everyone managed to control themselves nicely - most of us have met Keith before from the soap awards so it was cool," said the actress. "Keith is lovely and wicked.
"He has been on set a few times to chaperone his son - he is really supportive and just lets his son do his own thing, while he stays quietly in the background. Jay's a little sweetheart. He's a really good actor and this is his first big role. He's brilliant! It's hard work but Jay has a guardian."
Waugh recently admitted that she and her fellow cast members are in the dark over the future of the soap's ongoing serial killer storyline.
