Esther's suicide attempt boosts 'Hollyoaks' ratings

Esther's suicide attempt gave Hollyoaks' first-look edition its best audience of the year so far on Friday evening (January 18).

Some 873,000 (3.6%) opted to watch the dark episode on E4 at 7pm (+1: 101k) after Channel 4's 6.30pm screening took 1.02m (4.2%)

Coronation Street topped the soap ratings with 9.31m (36.2%) from 7.30pm (+1: 118k) and 9.2m (34.9%) at 8.30pm (+1: 164k) as Kirsty found Tyrone's secret phone.

EastEnders wasn't far behind with an impressive 8.76m (34.1%) as Tanya realised Max has lied to her again at 8pm. BBC Three's 10.30pm repeat appealed to 399k (2.3%).

Emmerdale logged 7.8m (32.1%) in its usual 7pm slot and 136k on ITV +1 for a Dingle-centred instalment.

Neighbours grabbed 833k (7.3%) at 1.45pm and 1.11m (5.5%) at 5.30pm, then Home and Away managed 835k (3.7%) and 5*'s first look had 495k (2%).

Elsewhere, Doctors averaged 2.27m (19.8%) for BBC One at lunchtime for a story titled 'Thicker than Water'.
