Plot teasers from new 'Oaks producer

Published Friday, May 22 2009, 00:02 BST | By Kris Green | 25 comments
New Hollyoaks series producer Lucy Allan is the fourth person to take the hot seat for DS's Producer Season 2009. The main serving of the interview can be found here, while several character teases and intriguingly cryptic plot hints appear below!

Ste, Abi and Daniel
"This is a big story for us over the course of the summer and Ste is a character that we've invested massively in. It's about Ste discovering that two people you trust are very different to what he thought they were... There's certainly going to be an unexpected end to it all that sees Ste re-evaluating everything he previously thought."

Sarah and Lydia - is it not a little McDean-esque? A lot of people are saying that it's almost a carbon copy of a the John Paul/Craig storyline? It's quite hypocritical of Sarah?
"Didn't Sarah criticise Craig because she was in a relationship with him [while she was with John Paul]? It was less about his sexuality and more about the fact that he was cheating on her. Whereas with Sarah and Lydia, neither of them is in a relationship and also Craig, bless him, the one thing that he could never say was 'I'm gay' and Sarah very early on has got over all that. It seems to me that it is a very different story and certainly the way it builds and finally plays out, it couldn't be any further away from John Paul and Craig if it tried."

The McQueens
"There's loads of stuff going on in the McQueen house. The one thing I thought after last year was that they had such a hard time with Niall, so we need to re-establish our favourite family of fun and remind ourselves who they all are."

Zak
"We've got Zak's brother Caleb - played by Michael Ryan - who turns up just in time to see Zak get an unexpected result to his degree. He's quite an unexpected brother and putting Hayley, Zak and Caleb together makes for some very interesting conversation."

Theresa
"Theresa has tons coming up. What viewers might be interested to know is that Theresa's going to fall in love. I don't think she expects it in the slightest… "

The Roys
"Anita has been a fantastic character through this racism storyline. She's compelling to watch and certainly someone to keep an eye on. In terms of the family, we've got a lot of sibling rivalry building up and Ravi's going to end up facing a big, life-threatening decision later on in the year that's going to throw a bit of a bomb in that household."

Malachy/Kris
"The brothers have some material coming up, but it's more about their own individual stories. You have to say 'what do you do with a tranny when he leaves university?' so there's some fun with Kris getting a job and there's a big identity story for him. With Malachy, I think it would be an error if his illness was the main focus of his character. He's a character that's full of energy and comedy and a lot of what we love about him is his outlook on life and boisterousness. Malachy's going to find his feet again in The Loft over the summer."

The Osbornes
"We're going to see the Osbornes face a lot more disappointment with Darren."

Calvin
"Calvin's got big stuff coming up, but most of his story [after Stunt week] is about him facing the consequences of who he became and trying to find his place in the village."

Cheryl - big plans?
"Absolutely. You can't have anything but big with Cheryl, can you? She arrives in the middle of the biggest funeral of the year and causes absolute mayhem and continues to do so..."

Will Spencer be sticking around in life after Warren?
"He'll be sticking around, yes."

And also on the cards...

I want the show to go back to the 2007 era... Seriously that was the best year I have ever seen of Hollyoaks. I've been doing my research. A lot was happening then and it was unmissable back then. Unfortunately I've turned off recently because i am hating some of the storylines atm, like Sarah and Lydia, i don't like that storyline, and Kris and Ravi in January means one too many gay storylines. It could be interesting depending how things play out but I'll miss Hannah and Justin :( I've watched the show for years and I remember it when the 4 teens were Nicole Nancy Hannah and Sarah, I thought that foursome worked very well together. I love Theresa but only time can tell how good these storylines can be.

Cant wait! It sounds really exciting.

i really want to know what happens to Hannah!

I've been pretty annoyed with Hollyoaks recently. I know its a soap and not based on real life but three is a lot of false hope and badly-thouhgt out storylines which have left me raging - for example, Sasha magicaly becoming able to cope with complex pattern cutting and be a designer overnight? Puts me and my classmate's degrees to shame. Also the nut allergy? If Lydia had taken her epipen, she would have hd to go to hospital as it is a shot of adrenaline and could kill...Believe me, I know about that too. Its just after brilliantly thought out storylines like Hannah's anorexia that have clear amounts of research in them, the new, maybe incidental things that are happening have not been thought out or looked at and are a bit odgy and sometimes a bit offensive. Stunt week was good though with some good little . One thing I have to say is stop using music in every scene! It's really getting to me - it doesn't feel like Hollyoaks, instead an awful drama like Waterloo Road! But yes, hopefully that stuff thats annoying me and my friends has been part of the writer transition period. More surprises and well-kept secrets would be good! And less music.

I think hollyoaks should use some of their characters more for example at first we used to Eddie working alongside Calvin, now we dont even see him. The show needs to bring in more characters to replace the ones who have left like Max and OB left and they brought no one to fill in their shoes.

To be honest I'm disappointed with what Lucy Allan has planned for Hollyoaks. It seems they are more intent on trying to grab the sort of audiences who watched Grange Hill than actually trying to cater for the audience Phil Redmond created Hollyoaks for. The ratings for this week show even with a major event happening that Hollyoaks has struggled to get a big audience.

Hollyoaks is by far the best soap and I can't wait for Cheryl to return.

why didn't she say more about Hannah? She and Justin are SO meant to be so why can't they be? Loads of it is way to predictable. I mean, Theresa and Newt are obviously going to get together and Abi will probably kidnap Lucas which may bring Amy running.

The current storylines in HO have all been done before. Amy getting post natal depression and her family not batting an eyelid that she'd not seen her kids. The ashworths starting a bad, old man ashworth writing a song for his anniversary! seen it seen it seen it! I want new storylines! Glad to be seeing the back of Russ, Justin & Hannah. Should maybe axe more regular characters and shake up the stories a bit.

Push Darren and Steph to the front. The show is missing Max and OB and these two are a decent comedy replacement for them. More of Tony as well to establish him as a Mr C figure. Loose the Ashworths and Archie. New students in. Sorted.

Hollyoaks was amazing but it's heading down at the moment, mainly because of the teen storylines... Put the McQueens in focus again, some comedy is always appreciated! Other than that I am quite intrigued with the Ste/Abi/Daniel storyline!

The only way Hollyoaks is going to get good if Bryan Kirkwood comes back and try and get Emma Rigby and Chris Fountain to stay and have a good couple for a change and get a happy ending. I wish to God I was writing this show.

Who is Cheryl? And what funeral is it?
Yikes, England, on May 23rd, 2009
I am afraid she is totally out of touch with the audience - HO is on a steep decline and has been since the end of the Niall storyline. This isn't an age thing - a teenager reviewer tore into its recent silliness in The Times kids section. As for Sarah and Lydia it is a pale copy of JP/C and she doesn't even remember that an essential element of that story was that C was not gay. It all augurs very badly for the show - how long before it goes the same way as Brookie?

Theresa is going to fall in love with Newt. It's already playing out now. I predict the teens go camping and end up murdering someone like Gaz? Newt is put on trial for murder. Zak will probably fail. Again, its already being hinted at when he said "Ah, I can't fail my degree" in an episode this week. Cant wait for the teenage stuff!

Time to turn Hollyoaks off I'm afraid. All this Lucy women seems to want to do is turn Hollyoaks into Grange Hill. Not meant to be sexist, but, EastEnders had a women in charge before Mr Santer and it was awful. Emmerdale had a women in charge until Gavin Blyth took over recently and it was in dire straights. Corrie Street as been awful in recent months and low and behold its a women in charge. Bryan Kirkwood made the show unmissable. During his peak there were lots of big storylines going off at once. Under this Lucy Allen it sounds like One big storyline every so often and the rest will be filler rubbish with the kids. There's a saying this women should take advice from: don't fix what isn't broken...

Bad times, the murder trial sounds interesting and I'm interested in the students. Should focus more on Zoe, Darren, Steph, Tony, Kris, Elliot, Nancy, Jacqui, Mercedes, Malachy, Sarah, Mike etc yeah the school kids should have screen time but they are getting LOADS. and to add I think Sarah getting over being gay so quickly isn't believable. In fact, this thing with Lydia isn't at all.

Love the sound of the teen group being in a lot this year there my favourite!! I think the wedding will be Kris and Nancy Just hope Newt and Lauren get back togetherr :D x

I am a little bit disappointed with the lack of information that was given. I think the Abi&Daniel/Amy&Ste storyline could prove to be very interesting depending how it's all portrayed. Theresea will clearly be falling in love with Newt but there really does need to be more of the McQueens. Notice that there was no mention of the Ashworths, which is surprising considering Hannah is meant to have some sort of dramatic exit towards the latter part of the year. All in all, Lucy Allen was just extremely vague about everything.
J, Bristol, on May 22nd, 2009
I like the teens group, the young 4 have worked well and its nice to see a new group growing through the show. The students however have been stale rubbish for ages, too grown up and boring. Archie and Elliot could be interesting but have nothing to do. I too want to see more Tony and Myra. We're really missing a Mr C or Jack type too.
