'Hollyoaks' Malachy Fisher chats 'flashforward'

By
Without doubt, the star of tonight's Hollyoaks 'flashforward' episode is Glen Wallace, who plays Malchy Fisher in the Channel 4 serial. His effortless, emotional and touching performance alongside Jennifer Metcalfe - who portrays his screen wife Mercedes - will certainly strike a chord with long-term viewers who have followed the characters' relationship from the beginning. Over the last year and a half, he's certainly made his character his own.

Before moving onto the chat with Glen, I have to mention the other shining star of the episode Nicole Barber-Lane, who plays momma McQueen, Myra. She doesn't have loads to say, but her shimmying and witty quip while Calvin (Ricky Whittle) and Carmel (Gemma Merna) strut their stuff to the Dirty Dancing signature tune more than make up for it.

OK, so back to business - what did Glen have to say about the 'flashforward' episode? Does he still think Malachy's in love with Mercedes? Why hasn't Malachy mentioned that he knows about Calvin and Mercedes' affair within six months? And would Malachy have the balls to shoot Calvin or have him shot?

Read on to find out the answers to those questions and more...

When did you hear about the 'flashforward'?
"My actual feeling was that I was gutted because I had to fly back from New York to film the episode! I've had a year's worth of training for the New York Marathon and I'd planned a holiday around it. The guys upstairs phoned me and asked if I'd amend my holidays to shoot the secret episode! Nobody knew about it and I was gutted because I'd had the New York trip planned for a year! I flew back and when I read the script, though, I was definitely up for it!"

What was your reaction to the concept?
"It's a really ambitious move. It's one of those ones where it can work really, really well or it doesn't. There's no in-between with these kind of episodes and for us to be trying this, it's fantastic. The episode itself is just brilliant."

Could you envisage that Malachy would be where he is in six months' time?
"We film so badly out of sequence anyway because of scheduling that I was filming material where Malachy found out about Calvin and Mercedes' affair and how he copes with it. So I had three or four blocks where I knew and didn't know about the affair. Then we threw on top of that the six months' time angle!"

Are you surprised that Malachy's still not confronted Calvin and Mercedes about the affair by May next year?!
"My whole argument was, 'Why wouldn't Malachy rip Calvin off Mercedes' back?' Sitting down and thinking about it, though, Malachy knows that his life is much better with Mercedes in it."

Do you know why he's not said anything?
"Not in terms of script, no. We're shooting February/March at the minute, so all I've been able to do is try to get my head around and understand the motivation as to why Malachy doesn't say anything for such a long period of time and why he'd stay with her."

Do you think Malachy truly loves Mercedes?
"Yeah, absolutely. There's an acceptance that he'd much rather have her in his life than not. There was a conversation about six months ago when he turned around to her and said, 'I understand you're a very physical and sexual being, so if you need to be with another man, I'll understand'. Mercedes went absolutely ballistic at him and said, 'You're the one I want'! That really calmed Malachy's fears at that point and the pair settled with the best intentions."

You have an amazing scene with Mercedes in the episode - what was that like to film?
"It was one of those scenes that just felt right on the day. It sounds a bit pathetic but when we were in the middle of those scenes, I felt the emotion - even though I'm not married to Jen [Metcalfe], she's not sleeping with my best mate! That hopefully comes across."

From your perspective, do you think that Malachy has the bottle to shoot Calvin?
"I can see how an audience would think that it could be him… I think when something's been done to a member of your family or to someone you love, we all have the capability of doing bad things."
