Hollyoaks producer Emma Smithwick recently caught up with Digital Spy for an exclusive chat about the soap's future and upcoming storylines.

If you haven't yet read the first part of the interview, catch up here for the latest gossip on 'Stendan', 'Stug', Hollyoaks Later and more.

Here, though, Soap Scoop presents some extra character teasers and gossip from Emma.

Will Mercedes get her comeuppance, and is there a danger of her become irredeemable after the stabbing?
"It's amazing - Mercedes gets away with blue murder (not literally!) all the time, and yet there's so much love for that character. There most definitely will be a comeuppance. With the stabbing, she did it so coolly and lied about it so easily - that can't last forever.

"Mercedes is a woman who is driven by her insecurities. She thinks she loves Riley and will do what it takes to win him. That's what it's about…winning. Mitzeee crossed her - she is dispensable but Riley…well, Riley is the prize. Mercedes Fisher usually gets what she wants and men usually fall in line with her. I want to see what happens when they don't…"

Do you still have plans for Riley and Mitzeee?
"Their love story began in Hollyoaks Later last year, and it was really exciting when we saw the chemistry between them. They do strike me as an ill-fated couple, though. Can they ever be happy?"

Are you committed to sticking with Carmel's injury storyline, without a soapland miracle cure?
"I definitely have no interest in miracle cures. The story will continue to explore how she deals with the scarring and how she lives with it. It's a really interesting storyline."

Martha recently accepted that she needed help with her drinking problem. Does that mean her alcohol story is coming to an end, or is there more to come?
"Martha is a brilliantly manipulative character. She did accept that she needed help, but you'll see that she doesn't actually take it. She just can't see that she really needs it, so that story will continue, and it certainly will bring out the strengths or failings of the three children. That's where I think it's the most interesting - to see how it affects them.

"Martha will be on a one woman mission to win back her family. She will take quite a dislike to Ally - she doesn't trust him as far as she can throw him, and doesn't like that he has so comfortably installed himself in her house with her family."

Will we see more of the older characters in general?
"Yes, definitely. Diane/Martha/Myra will cross, and I can't wait to see those three, as I think it will be so much fun. I love the character of Myra too - she's so funny and she packs a real punch when she's in storylines. So they're not going anywhere anytime soon.

"As for Rhys, Cindy, Tony and Jacqui - I am such a fan of this lot. It's so easy to create drama when you put this combination together. There is some pretty juicy stuff coming up, with quite a few shocks along the way."

Can you tease Nancy and Darren's future for us?
"I absolutely love this couple. They shouldn't work on paper, but somehow they do. With the baby, it's second time lucky for them, but it's never going to be smooth sailing with those two. As long as Darren's in the picture, it's never going to be easy!

"Having seen him interacting with the other male characters on the lads' night, I want to see more of the mischievous, naughty Darren. And I want to see more of neurotic Nancy. They're going to have quite a rough ride in September…"

Will we see Ellis Hollins (Tom) and Connor Wilkinson (Finn) appear in the show again?
"With Ellis, there were issues with his new school and scheduling, but hopefully we're clear of that now and he'll be back on the show. He's terrific and I miss him on screen. As for Finn in terms of storylines, he's with his dad and the stories haven't really demanded that he should be there, so we won't see him for the moment - but we'll see."

Are there any plans to further explore Phoebe's dark past and her terrible ordeal in Deena's clutches?
"I definitely wouldn't have given Phoebe such a rich introduction and a rich backstory had we not planned on using it again. It informs who she is, and we'll pick it up again.

"We've planned long-term for Phoebe. We knew she was a broken girl who had been through so much, yet had no self-pity. It's going to be really interesting to watch her go through all of the normal things that teenagers have to go through, and there's a long-term arc for her."

Will we also see Esther come into her own a bit more?
"Definitely - I love the character of Esther, and she's got a very big storyline coming up. She is the voice of reason - she's sensible but I want to see what happens when the popular kid at school, slowly but surely undermines Esther's sense of self.

"It's a long-running bullying story where social manipulation and psychological bullying get to the core of someone's being and make them feel inadequate. It will be lonely being Esther Bloom - she'll need all the friends she can get."

What's ahead for the Savage family?
"We've still got the 'Who's the daddy?' issue which we raised in the Savage Party week. We pulled the rug from under Dodger in terms of his identity, so that's definitely something that is coming up. What happens to a young man who has no idea of who he is anymore… and then you give him an answer, a history. All to come!

"We've also seen lots from Will on screen recently. Will is a weirdo with odd judgement and I want to see where that takes him! His sense of boundaries is slightly skew-whiff. Plus, he has always operated in the shadows of his brother so he has a misguided sense of entitlement - all of which should provide juicy drama."

After a quieter year for Theresa, does she have more material on the way?
"Definitely. Theresa will be appearing in Hollyoaks Later this year, and we'll see a new side to her relationship with Joel which is pretty hot!

"She's a really interesting character in that she is so brilliant at compartmentalising her actions - she wanders around the village as if butter wouldn't melt, yet she knows full well that she put a bullet through Calvin! We'll start to see a little bit of this creep in with Joel - she's more savvy than people would think!"

Which characters are you most excited about as we head into the autumn?
"Definitely Brendan - autumn into winter is going to see plenty of excitement for him. Jacqui and Cindy are two women that I am looking forward to seeing lots more stuff from. And the autumn will bring some high octane drama for Mercedes/Mitzeee and Riley. Esther is going to hit a pretty big low in October and November is going to be a whopper of a month - just you wait!"
