Aired Friday, Jan 1 2010 at 18:30 GMT on Channel 4

Zoe wakes in hospital on New Year's Day after being stabbed by Lydia the previous night. Archie and Kris arrive at the hospital in a frantic state, having only just heard what happened. Before going to see her, they're horrified to discover that Charlotte knew Lydia was responsible for Sarah's death. Dave comforts a distraught Charlotte as her friends unleash their fury, disgusted by her betrayal.

After believing Sarah committed suicide, a broken Mike's forced to come to terms with the fact his daughter was murdered and apologises to Zoe for ever doubting her. Amy also turns up to apologise. Although wounded - physically and mentally - Zoe's relieved that her nightmare is finally over.

Meanwhile, after managing to postpone Fernando's proposal, Gilly realises that he has to tell Steph how he feels or move on. Meeting Gilly in the village, Fernando confides in him about his worries but in an effort to put him off proposing, Gilly inadvertently helps Fernando reach a decision.

Cheryl, who's also having doubts about her own relationship with Gilly, is sent into a spin when she spies Gilly holding a ring as he bends down on one knee. Quickly jumping to conclusions, Cheryl thinks that Gilly's rehearsing a proposal and frantically runs to Steph for advice.

Feeling slightly jealous, a downbeat Steph returns home but is surprised to find the flat decorated with flowers. Confused by what's going on, Steph's gobsmacked when Fernando pulls out a ring and proposes. They head to The Dog to celebrate their engagement and caught up in the romance, Cheryl makes a decision on her own nuptials.

Gilly's gutted and knowing that it's now or never, he takes Steph to one side and tells her he loves her. His declaration, however, is drowned out by Cheryl on the mic. As a frustrated Gilly's forced to admit defeat, he's left shocked and confused as a giddy Cheryl announces that they're engaged, too.

Elsewhere, Lydia's being interviewed at the police station over her attack on Zoe but she shows no remorse. DI Fletcher tries to provoke a reaction but an emotionless Lydia is more concerned with whether or not Zoe's dead. When DI Fletcher tell her that she's being charged with murder and attempted murder, Lydia seems more disappointed than relieved that she didn't kill Zoe.

The reality of what lies ahead begins to hit home for Lydia and in her anger, she admits that it was Zoe who should have died, not Sarah. As Lydia's charged, she looks down at a picture of Sarah in her hand and the tears finally begin to fall. Get the Inside Soap magazine on your iPhone or iPad
