The 52-year-old actor recalled how members of the public struggle to separate his true self from the character that he has played sporadically for 25 years.
He told the Daily Star Sunday: "People actually shy away from me because they think I'm going to bark at them. But having said that they will still approach me - tentatively.
"A while ago I was staying at a mate's place and I went to the corner shop for some supplies. The woman behind the counter was acting very strangely and waiting for me to negotiate the price. She thought I was Paul Robinson."
However, Dennis conceded that audience confusion could be seen as a testament to his skills as an actor.
"It's a real compliment though as people know the character that well, they actually think I am like him in real life."
