Ray Meagher has revealed that he never thought Home and Away would last for 22 years.

The Australian actor, who has played Alf Stewart in the show since it began, said that he takes its success as a "wonderful compliment".

Meagher told New Idea magazine: "I never thought Home and Away would last this long. At first I thought it might last six months and then I thought there might be a couple of years' work in it.

"But 22 years! I don't think any of us in our wildest dreams would have imagined the show would go on so long. When a show like ours gets 11 Logie nominations after all that time, I reckon it's a wonderful compliment."

Meagher, who recently won the Gold Logie award for his role in the show, also revealed that some of his favourite "young actors" who have starred in Home and Away are Kate Ritchie (Sally Fletcher), Ryan Kwanten (Vinnie Patterson) and Chris Hemsworth (Kim Hyde).
