Home and Away star Ray Meagher has admitted that he can understand why his screen granddaughter Jodi Gordon decided to quit the soap.

Gordon bowed out from the Summer Bay serial in February after five years in the role of Martha MacKenzie.

Reflecting on the star's exit, Meagher - better known as Alf Stewart - told Holy Soap: "She's a lovely girl, Jodi, and I think she just thought her time had come and she decided to pursue other things. At that age you can't blame kids for wanting to do that, and all you can do is wish her well."

Discussing how Martha's departure has affected Alf, the actor continued: "He really misses her dreadfully. In the Bay at the moment she's the last blood relative he has. Morag comes and goes and there's a time capsule thing that linked Colleen and the Stewart family - I think that's a bit questionable. So he's very, very sorry to see her go."

Meagher is to begin a six-month break from Home and Away later this year in order to star in London's West End.
