Ray Meagher is poised to be immortalised in wax at Madame Tussauds.

The Australian actor, who is best known for playing Alf Stewart in Home and Away, will be the first celebrity to be featured in the new Sydney branch of the waxwork museum when it opens in May next year.

According to AAP, there will be 70 wax figures at the exhibition including Australian stars such as Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman and international faces like Johnny Depp and Lady GaGa.

Merlin Entertainment Australia director Edward Fuller revealed that each wax model can take up to six months to create, saying: "The hair is all individually inserted into the head."

He also said that the celebrities involved donate their own clothes for their models, adding: "Not only can you get up close and personal to your favourite star but they're actually wearing the clothes they might have turned up to the Oscars in."

Meagher has played Alf in Home and Away since 1988. In 2010, he won the Gold Logie Award for the 'Most Popular Personality' on Australian television.

It was recently revealed that he will be returning to the West End to reprise his role in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
