'Home and Away' to go on hiatus in August

Published Monday, Jun 22 2009, 13:21 BST | By Kris Green | 19 comments
Australian soap Home and Away is to take a four-week break during the month of August, I can confirm.

The decision to put the show on hiatus for such an extended period of time comes as UK transmission and Australian transmission dates draw ever-closer - the current delay stands at only two weeks!

Five's choice to take a break in the summer month of August will extend the transmission gap to around six weeks. If the show were to continue airing in the UK, we would eventually overtake Australian transmission due to the production breaks in Oz.

The cast and crew of H&A HQ in Australia take several breaks over the summer months, but the programme remains on Aussie screens for the duration.

Home and Away will air weekdays on Five until Friday, July 31. It will then take its break and return to screens on Monday, August 31.

what is wrong with showing it twice a week? That way we should not over take Australia... Good idea or what?!

I LOVE home and away. It would be better if we were at the same pace as Australia and we had breaks when they did. I prefered being just a few weeks away from their episodes now we'll be 6 weeks behind =(. And i have no idea what i'm going to do during these holidays without home and away.

nooooooooo i love home and away i always love watching the show, we are lucky to have it shown in the uk at all!

As long as it does come back on at the end of August, I'm sure I'll cope for a few weeks, annoying though!!

I wonder how long it will be before we start getting H&A the same day as Australia. I'd imagine a lot of people watch it on YouTube as it's one of the top viewed clips on the front page every day (on the Irish YouTube anyway)

I really don't want Home and Away to not air for 4 weeks. I love the programme.

This is highly disappointing...I have been loving not being so far behind the Aussie timescales...and think a weeks gap here and there would have been by far a better idea than having to go cold turkey for the month! I don't agree that we should go "ahead" of the Aussies though, as surely they need to film it before we can view it??

Annoying, as most already know whats happening in the next few weeks either through the many leaks, so I think it be left like it is, and be more close to Oz. Actually we do have a break over Christmas, so why not do it then
Lizzy, Northamptonshire, on June 23rd, 2009
The thing that I dont get is how they let us get soo close to them in the first place, why didn't they have a week break here or there, that means that we dont have to miss H&A for a mounth and we will be off school for that month as well. PLus, is it sooo bad for us to go ahead of Autrailia for a while, it would make a nice change

Funny the UK soaps never have a break but Aus soaps do, lazy workers.
Kelvin, Ireland, on June 23rd, 2009
This sucks!! I love Home & Away so much and now its going to be gone for a whole month? Why? Would it not be a benefit that we're so close to the Oz episodes so that their Xmas scenes are not in the middle of our summer and the spoilers are leaked so quickly over this side? Gotta say I'm pretty annoyed over this.
Megan, Northern Ireland, on June 22nd, 2009
I don't think I can cope with 4 weeks of no Charlie on my TV screen! Bad decision! Bad times!
Kris, Leicester, on June 22nd, 2009
They take a break for Easter and one for Christmas - with the latter being during their Summer at which point, Australia takes a break - usually around 7 weeks.
Kiran, London, on June 22nd, 2009
Its so unfair for us UK viewers to miss out for four weeks and fall further behind than Australia but then again I'll guess it will be OK because by the end of November it will be the end of the 2009 season for Australian viewers which will give us UK viewers an extra 2 weeks in December before the Christmas and new year break and then another extra 2 weeks before the 2010 premiere starts in Australia in January which will put us UK viewers 2 weeks behind again.
Jay, London, on June 22nd, 2009
i hope they leave it on a cliffhanger then, so people will want to tune back in! its funny to think we are now only 2 weeks behind, because at one point we were well over a year behind!
Jeremy, W Yorks, on June 22nd, 2009
It's disgraceful. I bet Neighbours doesn't get taken off air, so why should Home and Away?
Wamdue, Peterborough, on June 22nd, 2009
They should use the vacant slot, to help Neighbours catch up a bit
Lee, Cardiff, on June 22nd, 2009
Sucks! I love being only two weeks behind. Dunno why they can't keep it like this and just take breaks when Australia do. Much nicer to the fans.
EG, Berkshire, on June 22nd, 2009
How stupid - they should just mirror the breaks it has there. I like that it's nearer the transmission date in Australia.
