New Emmerdale recruit Chris Bisson is to make a guest appearance in BBC One's daytime medical drama Doctors.

The 34-year-old - who makes his return to soap as Jai Sharma in the ITV1 rural show on September 11 - takes on the role of jewellery wholesaler James Gupte, husband to a heavily pregnant Nadine (Nathalie Armin).

As he heads out to the bank, he instructs a delivery man to leave his latest hoard of stock in the safe. However, when the safe is closed, the courier fails to notice that Nadine is inside.

James returns home and is stunned to realise that his wife is trapped in the vault. He is further perturbed when the fire brigade reveal that the safe's manufacturer has been out of business for years.

It's not long before Nadine's waters break and James quickly calls Dr Daniel Granger (Matthew Chambers). Arriving at the scene, Daniel realises that his previous patient George Swade (Alan Ford) was a safe cracker.

With that, Daniel makes a call and it's a race against time to free Nadine from the vault before her condition deteriorates further.

Bisson's episode, titled 'Mr Jelly', is due to transmit on Friday, October 9 at 1.45pm on BBC One.

Bisson is most noted for his role as Coronation Street cab firm owner Vikram Desai and East Is East's Saleem Khan.

Earlier this year, he made a guest appearance in BBC One's flagship primetime medical drama Casualty.
