Melody failed her first assessment, and she tells Archie how important it is that she passes this time! Archie comforts Melody, telling her that she just needs to relax and listen to Heston; he knows what he’s doing!! Melody convinces Heston how vitally important it is to her that she passes this year but then realises to her horror just how little experience Heston has as a GP and her stress escalates to bursting point. She sobs that she’s never going to pass at this rate.
Heston rallies and tells her about some of his downfalls at the beginning of his career. He promises her that he won’t let her down and gives her some good pointers so that Melody realises that she’s in safe hands (he also swears her to secrecy about his inexperience). They have an excellent assessment in the end and as Melody relaxes, she can’t resist teasing Heston about his passion for Lily. Heston is horrified that everyone seems to know about them.
Alongside this, Vivien goes to see Lily. She admits that this week has been as bad as any since her rape attack. Before, Lily can utter a word, Vivien states that she doesn’t want counselling – she doesn’t believe in it. Lily suggests that Vivien might perhaps sell the home where the attack took place and move on? Vivien won’t consider her suggestions and leaves Lily defeated.
Archie arrives at the Icon Bar, Kirsten is there waiting for him. They hit it off and talk about their shared interest in the environment. At the end of a perfect date, Archie walks Kirsten home. He goes in for a modest goodnight kiss but she’s on for a proper passionate kiss. They awkwardly decide not to take things further but there is a fizzing passion between them. For Archie, the evening couldn’t have been better but as soon as Kirsten closes the door she kisses the photo of a handsome young man and assures him everything is going to be alright.
Meanwhile, Anne Hedley (61) is the wife of Brian Hedley (63) and has been pandering to the needs of her husband for many years. Brian fought in the Aden conflict in the early sixties and was badly wounded. Brian appears to give Anne a slightly hard time most of the time and it is clear that Anne is fed up of his commanding ways.
Today’s the day when they receive news that a mortgage deal has been accepted on a house that Brian wants to move to in the Lake District. When a surveyor comes to their house, he makes a startling discovery, foetal remains in the basement of the house. The police have been informed and DS Chris Healy (45) has been called in to deal with the case and is met by Lily, here to assess forensic evidence of the remains. Brian is angry that is this discovery will put the kibosh on their moving plans and Anne’s faints at the news from DS Healy that they might be looking at a murder enquiry.
When she comes round, Anne blames her fainting on the stress of moving house but Lily suspects there’s more to it. When the remains are taken from the house, Anne becomes uncommunicative and Brian fears for her wellbeing. He calls Lily back to the house where Anne explains that the baby was in fact hers. She explains to Lily that the baby was from another man, one that she met when she received news that Brian was lost in action. Brian was actually retraced and when Anne received a telegram noting that he was alive, she self terminated the baby. Lily explains that she will have to notify the police, and finally confront Brian over the matter. Brian’s left dazed and shaken by the news.
Anne tries to clarify that she stopped the relationship as soon as he was back, that she didn’t want another child with Brian, and that the house has been a prison that she’d built around herself. They had both sacrificed things in their lives and had been living a tarnished existence for the last forty years. Anne stops Brian in his tracks when she tells him that she doesn’t expect them to stay together. She’s decided that they should sell the house and both go their separate ways leaving Brian beside himself. There’s no way he can convince Anne that they can continue their relationship now that her secret has been unearthed, leaving Brian doubtful for their future beyond this sad revealing day!
