Meanwhile, Elaine Finner (44) is the wife of Keith Finney (48) who has recently undergone heart transplant surgery. Heston examines a cheerful Keith and everything appears to be fine, but Elaine has her doubts.
A quiet moment with Heston reveals that she thinks he’s become a different person since the surgery, and Heston explains the scientific possibilities of it being true. Elaine exposes that the old Keith had two affairs – but she likes the new Keith! Keith appears to be enjoying this new lease of life and since the heart transplant their legacy remains. That is until Liz Simpkins (42) comes on the scene. Keith tries to send Liz away before Elaine sees her but it’s too late.
Shocked by this encounter, Keith has a panic attack and the two women take him down to the surgery. First appearances are that Keith is trying to hide his meandering ways, but that’s far from the truth. Liz still has strong feelings for Elaine, (they’ve had a relationship for about a year) but Elaine put a stop to it soon after Keith’s operation. It’s all too much for Keith to have the two women together in the same room and he reveals to Heston that he knew about their little ‘fling’.
Heston can see a changed man, but when Liz confronts Keith, revealing to Heston he had a violent and bitter past, he begins to have his own uncertainties about what’s going on. Elaine tries to calm Liz down but Keith can’t wait to see the back of her and asks her to leave. As Liz leaves she offers Elaine one last chance to make up her mind, but Keith attacks her remorse further leaving her defeated.
Elaine eventually stays with Keith but it isn’t long before the surface of his ‘new’ personality starts to crack, revealing the ‘real’ Keith. Heston provides invaluable support for Elaine and confronts Keith when he tries to grab her. Heston admirably watches as Elaine decisively composes herself and finally leaves Keith. She realises that Liz’s fierce loyalty and loving nature is what she wants. Keith is left alone, a beaten man.
