Archie asks about Kirsten’s relationship history and she assures him that there is no-one lurking in the shadows. Archie is pleased to learn that he and Kirsten come from similar backgrounds and that they are very well suited.
Over the course of the conversation, Kirsten asks Archie about his work and wonders if the drugs trial patients are adding to his workload. Archie is touched that she’s noticed the posters and has taken an interest in his work. At the end of the day, Archie tells Jimmi that he thinks Kirsten is pretty much perfect.
Jimmi is leafing through some medical literature when something leaps out at him – there is a lecture tonight on forensic archaeology and he knows it would be right up Lily’s street. On impulse, he circles the item and leaves the page on Heston’s desk. Heston doesn’t know where this suggestion came from but as soon as he gets the chance, he asks Lily if she’d like to join him. Lily is delighted, but she smells a rat when she speaks to Daniel so she returns to Heston and asks him outright whether it is a date. Heston can see that he has to say no and manages, by the skin of his teeth, to convince her that he is genuinely interested. That evening Lily is in awe of the lecture, but when she turns to Heston, she finds that he’s fallen asleep.
Vivien tells Julia that she’s on the case with her driving lessons. She says that she doesn’t want to impose on Jimmi again so she’s booked some lessons with a professional female driving instructor. Julia is impressed as she thinks this could be just the thing to help Vivien move on from the trial.
Vivien then tells Julia that she’s so confident that she’s booked her test for next week and she’s taking a friend on a driving holiday in the Yorkshire Dales straight after. Julia thinks that Vivien has bitten off more than she can chew.
Meanwhile, Jimmi is out on house calls and his first call of the day is for Elizabeth Maxwell, a 54 year old divorcee with back pain. Unbeknownst to Jimmi, Elizabeth has lived alone since the death of her mother a few months earlier. When Gwen Dayton (72) turns up at the house, Jimmi presumes that she is Elizabeth’s mother. Elizabeth is distraught about the presumption so Jimmi tactfully investigates as to who she is. Gwen stands firm that this is her house, lived in it all her life, but Jimmi’s careful questioning offers signs that she is suffering from dementia.
Gwen kindly asks if she can use the toilet; the perfect opportunity for Jimmi to call the police to take over. Further investigation with the police rule out anyone missing from a care home, and when PC Craig Turner (a 22yr old Police Constable) turns up, Gwen has slipped through Jimmi’s fingers and left the house. A smug PC Turner informs Jimmi about his oblivious behaviour, wasting police time but Jimmi’s unthankful for his ‘attitude’ and continues to treat Elizabeth.
PC Turner makes a shocking discovery, news just in that a lady fitting the same description has also been to a neighbouring house and the tenant has realised her purse has gone missing. Elizabeth panics, finds that her purse has also gone walkabout so Jimmi and PC Turner go on the hunt for Gwen. They’re soon hot on her tail and PC Turner thinks that he has caught his assailant but it is another elderly woman fitting the same description.
PC Turner’s bedside manner is somewhat questionable and Jimmi is incensed by his over-formal approach to policing. It’s Jimmi that catches the eye of the ‘real’ Gwen and finally tracks her down.
Gwen is caught red handed, but continues to play the fool around Jimmi. He’s not falling for her trickery twice in one day and finally exposes Gwen to the point where she has to give in. Gwen owns up to her actions, explaining that it’s the thrill of the ride that keeps her going especially at her age. She’s amazed to have successfully performed such a travesty under the nose of a young professional but is happy to be taken into custody. Jimmi’s professional approach to his work outshines police efforts, much to the annoyance of PC Turner!
