As Kirsten sits, waiting to reluctantly having her first bout of drugs, she gets talking to the guy sitting next to her. They share small talk until he starts boasting about how he talked his way back onto the drugs trials since he was kicked off for having headaches. Kirsten instantly recognises him when he mentions his name. It’s Mark WELTON, Archie’s patient that he has been trying to track down.
As they wait to commence the trial she tries to tell him that his life could be in danger but she sounds hysterical and far fetched and Mark just thinks she’s mad. Kirsten become more and more insistent and starts ranting about the companies appalling ethics. Inevitably, she draws attention to herself and Narinder appears with one of the staff who instantly recognises her as an activist who had been part of protests against the company in the past.
Mark is taken into a bay and Kirsten tries to stop him from taking the drugs. Narinder exposes to Mark that Kirsten is an activist, but unfazed by the reveal, he reluctantly takes his drugs much to the horror of Kirsten who watches in the background. He pretends to suffer a severe reaction but jokingly sits up, laughing at Kirsten. Soon after, she is booted out the door with a warning; next time she pulls a stunt like this it will be a police matter.
Daniel limps into work with Isobel looking dishevelled and unkempt as he slept on the sofa last night. Melody and Julia take pity on the image of Daniel with a baby and they son discover that Isobel has formed a profound attachment to Daniel as every time someone tries to prize her away from him, she gets upset.
Daniel has to alternate all day between trying to work with a baby strapped to his chest or leaving her with another member of staff. Melody cheers Daniel up by assuring him that there is nothing more attractive to a woman than a man who is gifted with babies. Heston reflects that it’s not universally true when he sees Lily avoiding Izzie!
Daniel tries to pin down Izzie’s mother all day but doesn’t get anywhere. Melody checks on him at the end of the day and wonders at Daniels ability to calm Isobel from crying. She thinks Daniel’s getting the hang of fatherhood but he disagrees, he was never cut out to be a Dad and the sooner he can find the mother or hand her over to social services, the better! He explains to Melody that he is going to Greece on Friday and he’s resolute that there’s no way he’s taking a baby on the plane whatsoever.
Meanwhile, Ida Wright (72) is a diminutive widow in desperate need to get her windows replaced. Double glazing salesman Alex Paynter (25) has called around to give her a quote and he is being pressured by his boss (Colin Mathers - 47) to secure the deal. Meanwhile, Archie visits Ida for her check up so Alex goes outside and calls Colin to let him know how he is getting on.
Angry that he isn’t getting anywhere quickly, Colin viciously reminds Alex of his criminal past, trying force him to take desperate measures in securing a deposit. Archie reminds Ida of cowboys trying to prey on vulnerable people and Archie leaves thinking that she is going to tell him to go. When Archie gets back to the surgery Ida calls him and informs him that Alex has returned. He’s has deviously discovered bank records indicating that Ida has a bit of money and tries to smooth the deal by offering to take her shopping, even pushing her to withdraw a deposit!
Archie tries to get hold of Ida all day and also tells Ruth that he senses that Ida is being played like a fool, but there is no convincing her! She appears to be enjoying Alex’s company, but when they return to Ida’s house, Alex tries to resolve the deal. Colin has been informed that she has £60,000 stowed in the bank and applies more pressure on Alex to get her to sign up for a conservatory, but Ida won’t proceed unless she gets a good discount.
Thinking that Alex isn’t doing his job properly, Colin informs him is on his way over. Ida has secretly called Archie over and we discover that there is more to Ida than meets the eye! She wasn’t expecting Alex in the first instance and she knew that Colin had previously duped an ill friend into having a very expensive conservatory installed. She’s set up a camera in her room to try and catch Colin in the act of pressuring her to payout a cancellation fee. She stands firm on her allegations about Colin but he turns nasty and rifles through her purse to obtain the deposit.
Archie arrives in the nick of time and tries to restrain Colin, asking Alex for his help but he is reluctant to do so. We learn that Alex was convicted of manslaughter, graciously served his time but he fears that if he intervenes, he might do the wrong thing. Colin breaks free and charges for Archie, but Alex comes to his senses and detains Colin in the nick of time. Colin expresses that Alex will take him down with him and Alex is left rejected, but Ida can see that Alex is a good lad at heart and she expresses a heart warming offer to house him.
