At the end of the day Ronnie knocks on the door of George’s consulting room; he waves a white handkerchief as he gingerly enters. George admits that she has become a bit obsessed with conceiving, and planning their sex life like a military campaign. She promises to ease off.
At the Mill Heston is in a particularly good mood. Julia thinks Heston fancies Vivien, and discusses it with Jimmi who laughs at the idea. Lily overhears the conversation and confronts Heston about his chirpy mood. He admits he is ‘playing cupid’. Lionel, the love of Vivien’s life, is in town. Lily points out that as Heston told Lionel he wouldn’t say anything to Vivien he should keep his word and keep quiet.
Heston is conflicted when he receives a text from Lionel asking how Vivien is. Seeing Vivien on her own, Heston approaches her, but is beaten to it by Lily.
Later Heston whisks Vivien off to the Icon with the pretence of needing her advice. Just as Heston is eventually coming to the point at the Icon Lily arrives and interrupts just in time. She also claims to need Vivien’s advice, poignantly glancing at Heston on an issue of client confidentiality. Vivien says she thinks a doctor should never meddle in someone’s life just because they think they can manipulate a better outcome. Heston then lies, claiming he only wanted Vivien’s company.
Vivien leaves indignantly and Lily follows. Turning back she checks that Heston has got the message. Heston and Lily exchange a look - much to his disgust he now realises that he has to keep schtum.
Meanwhile, Early in the morning Jenni Carne (31) sits at the kitchen table. She has obviously had a sleepless night, and is tense, watching the clock. Paul Carne (32) arrives home to Jenni; they talk but rarely make eye contact. Paul goes to get some sleep. Jenni maintains her vigil, staring at the kitchen window of the opposite flat where Marc walks over to the sink, shirtless and muscular. Initially he seems unaware he is being watched, but then their eyes meet and they both smile. Later leaving for work Jenni sees a ‘For Sale’ sign being put up outside Marc’s flat and seems stressed about this.
Ruth is sitting in a café and is served by Jenni. Two youths also in the café leave without paying. Jenni tries to follow them but it’s too late; Jenni is distraught as her wages will be docked. After breaking a glass it is all too much for her and she runs out. Outside the café Ruth consoles her. Ruth seems to understand Jenni and Paul’s seemingly difficult relationship, claiming to have a friend in a similar situation. Jenni says she has met someone else – Marc. Offering to help Jenni, Ruth gives Jenni her phone number.
Arriving back at work Ruth is surprised to already have a message from Jenni. Ringing her back, Jenni says she is going to leave Paul and tell Marc how she feels - Ruth is horrified and feels responsible. Getting her address from the database Ruth turns up at Jenni’s flat but only Paul is in. Making small talk, Paul mentions Jenni has a very active imagination.
Paul goes to make a cup of tea and Ruth sees in the opposite flat Marc kissing a woman that looks like Jenni. As Paul returns and also looks out the window Ruth panics as the woman starts to turn round. At the same time the door slams and Jenni enters. Uncomfortable, Jenni looks for an excuse to talk to Ruth alone.
They go into the bedroom, leaving Paul intrigued. Jenni tells Ruth how her and Marc plan to leave together in the morning. Jenni is convincing but Ruth realises she must be lying. Jenni starts to pack and, helping, Ruth finds a bottle of ‘Risperidone’ and asks her whether she’ll need them? Jenni says no, and that they are Paul’s.
Quietly Ruth rings Lily to ask about the drug; and finds out it’s an anti-psychotic. She confronts Jenni about the pills and the situation with Marc. Jenni gets angry and Paul enters to see what’s wrong. She asks Ruth to leave but as she rushes out her anger drains and she calls after her. Paul manages to catch up with Ruth outside. Ruth reveals that she works at the Health Centre but is shocked to find out Jenni has Bipolar Disorder. Paul seems drained by the stress of dealing with Jenni’s condition alone.
The incident leads Ruth to reflect on her own demons. Ruth tells Paul about Jenni’s fantasy with Marc; he is shocked because he first met Jenni when he lived in the flat opposite, Marc’s flat. The fantasy is actually a memory. Back in the bedroom Jenni apologises to Paul for not taking her medication. Asking for a glass of water, she resolves to take it from now on. They share a new sense of hope.
