'Hillgate J-91: Part I'
George is clearing some of her stuff from the campus surgery with Ronnie’s help. She is feeling queasy this morning. Julia asks to speak to George. Ronnie leaves as she continues to struggle with her nausea. Julia shows her the poison pen letter but George has to rush to the loo.

At lunch George is telling Jimmi about the recent China developments and mentions how she is off her food putting it down to excitement. Later Jimmi finds her in the campus sickbay. He suggests she might be pregnant, she denies it but it sets her wondering.

At home in the evening, George is looking at a positive pregnancy test when Ronnie comes home and she tells him. He is delighted but George is apprehensive saying it changes everything.

Julia offers Karen a permanent job. Karen asks Ruth to meet for lunch to discuss the job offer. Anxious to avoid Daniel Ruth suggests the Icon.

At lunch, they debate the pros and cons of the job. After lunch she goes to see Julia, accepting the job.

Meanwhile, William McKellar (57), Julia’s new neighbour, is at home and answers his phone to be told by a threatening voice that he is being watched. ‘Scum’ has been painted on his car. He is obviously stressed by the hate campaign. The caller is Harry Brydon (23); we see a tattoo on his chest saying ‘SLA’. His girlfriend, Tara Ashmore (19) asks who he was talking to.

Getting ready for work, Julia looks through her post and finds a poison pen letter telling her a paedophile lives at No. 27. As she leaves she misses the graffiti on William’s car but seeing him she leaves quickly.

Janet Ashmore (45) is getting ready for a difficult day at work. William rings to remind her he has a doctor’s appointment.

Outside the campus surgery a group of student demonstrators are gathering, including Tara and Harry, on their way to a demo at Hillgate Laboratory. Tara gives Archie a leaflet. Archie enters reading aloud from the leaflet with indignation and debates Hillgate and animal testing with Ronnie and George. Julia warns Archie not to go to the demo.

A group gathers outside the lab but there is an uneasy stand off due to the police presence. Janet’s car edges forward. She spots her daughter, Tara, in the crowd. Tara sees her in mum covert alarm.

At the Mill, Jimmi sees William – his blood pressure is a bit high and his controversial job is causing stress. On reception Julia tells Karen that DCI Bateman (43) is on her way. As DCI Bateman arrives with DS Glover they meet Jimmi and William in reception.

When Julia enters she is horrified to see William. In Julia’s office William reads the poison pen letter. Julia is confused by William and DCI Bateman’s conversation until she hears where he works. When alone William asks Julia round for dinner that night and she accepts. DCI Bateman says she will drive William to the lab.

Archie hurries off to the lab at lunch time, despite Ruth’s warnings. As the police car arrives Harry and Tara rush to the front line. As the car goes through the gate, Harry moves off round the perimeter fence. Archie arrives but is a bit alarmed by the level of anger.

In the office, William is oblivious to Tara’s personal angst as she tries to call her daughter. Things get more serious as Archie and Tara are pushed forward into the police line. As a press photographer arrives the riot police move in and try to end the protest. Archie is in a tug of war with the police line over Tara, and caught on camera. In a scuffle he is taken to the police van. Harry arrives from nowhere and drags Tara away. Archie calls Ruth to say he’s been arrested.

Harry and Tara go to the SLA HQ and she discovers his plan to break into the lab tonight. She sees a new zealous side of Harry that she doesn’t like and leaves. He chases after her and tries to convince her to help. She tells him her mum works at the lab. He already knew and asks her to get the office keys.

At home Janet and Tara have a huge argument. When Janet’s back is turned Tara takes the keys from her bag. She is tempted to warn her mum about the break in.

At dinner Julia and William talk easily and bond. Outside a hooded figure moves towards William’s driveway. As Julia and William are having coffee a grenade like canister smashes through the window. The hooded figure runs to his accomplice’s car and we see it is Harry. CS gas fills the room and William tells Julia to get out. Julia is stricken with terror.
