She tells Julia that she is convinced that Immersion and Exposure therapy will help Jimmi and tries to get her support. Julia is impressed with Karen’s research and offers to talk to Jimmi but makes no guarantees.
Julia tries to talk to Jimmi about his OCD and although he’s adamant that Karen’s treatment options aren’t for him, it makes him think about his condition.
Karen fakes a spider phobia to convince Jimmi that she could do the Immersion Therapy with him but is interrupted mid effort by an incoming patient. Jimmi realises that he has to reconsider his own methods of coping and tells Karen that he’ll do the Immersion therapy. She tells him that he won’t be alone; she’ll go with him to overcome her spider phobia.
As Jimmi leaves, Karen’s smile reveals her deception; she’s got it in the bag!
Meanwhile, Roger Parnell (early 60s) sits alone at the breakfast table and makes a call on his mobile. As the house phone starts to ring, Roger listens to the recorded answer phone message left by his late wife Kathleen and as it finishes, Roger redials. His daughter Mary Parnell (38) arrives and finds her father in floods of tears and clearly unable to cope. She takes him to The Mill for an appointment with Jimmi who shares his condolences over Kathleen’s death.
Mary tells Jimmi that Kathleen died of a stroke but it’s evident that Roger is finding it difficult to come to terms with his wife’s death. Mary chastises her father for not trying to be positive; at least they’ve gotten rid of the endless nurses and carers traipsing through the house but Roger’s loneliness is apparent. Jimmi gives Roger a prescription for his sleeping problems and tries to advise Mary on dealing with her own grief but is dismissed.
In the meantime Evelyn Fontaine (40s) lets herself into Roger’s house, obviously looking for something in particular. She is caught out when Roger and Mary return home and Roger steams into the kitchen, angry that Kathleen’s possessions may be at risk. He bursts in guns blazing for confrontation to find Evelyn, Kathleen’s former carer, in the midst of ironing, but in his haste causes Evelyn to burn her arm with the iron. She was worried that Roger couldn’t cope alone and wanted to help but Mary is furious.
Jimmi treats Evelyn’s burn whilst she tells him that she forged quite a connection with Kathleen and the family, which is why she went back to help, but comes to the conclusion that she should give them some space. Jimmi urges Evelyn to think of her own needs too, she enjoyed seeing Roger as a friend and helping out, but her mind is made up. Meanwhile, waiting for Evelyn in reception, Mary is suspicious of Evelyn’s motives and tries to convince Roger that he needs to cope alone and tell Evelyn not to come back again.
An awkward encounter between Roger and Evelyn leaves both unfulfilled as they mutually agree that Evelyn shouldn’t call round again. Roger tries to find comfort in his daughter but she doesn’t have enough time for him and he feels even more despondent. Jimmi encourages Roger to think about his actions and reconsider the situation with Evelyn. Roger and Evelyn are united as makes Evelyn a work proposition.
