After discovering that there’s a fault with the Campus Surgery electrics, Julia rings Heston to ask if he can meet their new trainee for an informal chat as she can’t leave until the electrics are sorted. Heston is off to St Phil’s anyway so is happy to go and give the new trainee a grilling! After an eventful day (see above) Heston is happy to welcome Simon into the team.

Michelle is in a foul mood and Melody encounters her wrath when she interrupts Michelle surfing the net. Michelle’s anger towards Ruth is revealed when she berates both Melody and Julia for their unwavering support for Ruth whilst she, the real victim, has to struggle on. Cherry engineers a meeting between Julia and Michelle in the staff room but is disappointed when it’s evident that no reconciliation has been made between the two.

Michelle is then caught red handed as she attempts to print her CV. The failing electrics mean Cherry gets there first and she asks Michelle if she really would leave? Michelle tells Cherry she has no choice: if Ruth returns how can she stay?

Meanwhile, Doctor Simon Bond (27) (new series regular David Sturzaker) rushes to his meeting with Julia at the hospital, but sitting waiting for him in the hospital canteen instead is the legendary Dr Heston Carter. Simon’s bumbling awe of Heston is obvious and when Heston suggests a trip to the pub for their meeting, Simon eager to impress, rushes after him. Driving along the peaceful country road Simon is sees a suspicious hole in the hedge and tells Heston to stop the car.

As they go to investigate they see a crashed car and Heston immediately takes charge of the situation, instructing a nervous Simon. Heston approaches the first casualty, Jane Foulton (75) who is still strapped into the passenger seat and has her hand pressing against the side of her stomach. Heston is worried but Jane persists in guiding him to her grandson, Kenny Foulton (24) who is lying injured in front of the car. Heston examines Kenny and advises him to lie still as Kenny has difficulty standing. He realises they’ll need two ambulances for both victims but Simon can’t get a mobile phone signal. Aware of the urgency of the situation, Heston sends Simon off to find signal.

Heston tries to alleviate Kenny’s pain but realises something is amiss when he spots that Kenny is sweating profusely, cramping and is badgering him for pain relief medication. Kenny reveals he can’t remember exactly how the accident happened but Heston puts two and two together when he remembers that Rosetta House, a drugs rehabilitation centre is not far from where they are. As Kenny denies his involvement in the accident, Heston realises that he needs to check on Jane’s condition.

Heston takes Jane’s vitals and she tells him Kenny didn’t manage to finish the rehab programme and begged her to take him to his dealer. She refused but admits she gave him the car keys so feels responsible for the crash. Heston doesn’t have time to digest this, as the true extent of Jane’s injury is revealed; she’s bleeding profusely from a wound on her stomach. Heston is helpless and questions why she put Kenny before herself but Jane is still adamant that Kenny is the priority and she wants his parents to give him another chance.

Simon returns telling Heston the ambulances are on the way, and he’s instructed to monitor Kenny whilst Heston looks after Jane. Simon feels out of his depth and Kenny cries out in real pain, but Simon doesn’t trust him until he realises his breathing is becoming laboured. In the meantime Heston tries to put pressure on Jane’s bleeding wound but can tell that Jane’s strength is fading fast and she can see Heston start to panic; his heart rate increases and he takes time out to calm himself down.

Heston is called over to Kenny by a worried Simon and diagnoses Kenny with flail chest but tells Simon he’ll have to carry out the procedure alone. Simon is stunned to learn that Heston had a heart attack during his time as a surgeon and becomes even more nervous to take action.

As Heston returns to Jane’s side, he shouts instructions to Simon to apply pressure to the ribs but Simon struggles do this alone. Jane urges Heston to leave and help Kenny and both Simon and Heston work on him together, eventually easing Kenny’s pain. There’s just enough time for Heston to tell Jane that Kenny will be OK before she loses her own battle and Kenny sees his grandma die.

In hospital Kenny tells Heston he used to steal money from his grandma but Heston tells him that she must have had faith that Kenny could change. Jane wanted him to turn his life around and Kenny admits he doesn’t want her sacrifice to have been in vain. Simon and Heston debate whether they saved the right person but Heston reiterates that it was Jane’s choice and not theirs that made the decision for them.

Heston then surprises Simon by saying that he will absolutely recommend him for the placement but asks Simon to keep quiet about his little ‘hiccup’ earlier during the procedure. An excited Simon rings his mum with the good news.
