Cybil bemoans the actions of her son to Daniel but praises him for cheering her up; he has worked wonders and on his departure she jokingly tells him how he deserves a reward. Cherry has high hopes for her relationship with Simon but tells Karen she’s unsure if the feelings are reciprocated.
When Simon asks Cherry if she wants to look at his new telescope that evening her hopes are raised and she stocks up with romantic food. Cherry’s attempts to entice Simon with a sexy dress and alluring smile go awry as he focuses on the constellations and fails to get the hint. Will he ever make a move?
Meanwhile, music lecturer Don Fraser (39) reminds his heavily pregnant wife Nina (36) about his impending visit to Paris with talented student, Jenny Beaumont (20). The young cellist has an audition with a top orchestra and he’s going to provide support, but he omits the fact the pair are actually sleeping together.
In consultation with Heston for medication for her nerves, Jenny tells Heston about the audition and the practice performance she’s giving that night. He picks up on the nuances in the lecturer/student relationship but it isn’t until Nina arrives for her routine check up that the pieces fit together.
She suspended her own successful music career so they could have children but is oblivious to the fact that Don is doing the dirty on her. Heston tries to encourage Nina to put herself first but she laughs him off.
Spurred on by Heston, Nina makes a shock discovery when she goes to surprise Don at work and catches him in an embrace with Jenny. She bolts before she’s spotted and goes back to The Mill in shock where she relays to Heston what has happened: she has given everything up and for what? She decides to test Don, asking him to give up his trip to Paris but he tells her that he can’t give up on his student, unaware that Nina knows everything.
Heston and Lily prepare to watch the concert with key performer, Jenny in full flow. Don is in the front row, encouraging her when Nina enters with Lucas in tow. Jenny clocks them and her performance deteriorates before she eventually stops. Instead of berating her, Nina gives Jenny advice on performance and leaves a startled Don trying to explain himself. Jenny attacks him for his lies; he never mentioned what a lovely person Nina is or worse that she is pregnant.
Heston comforts Jenny and urges her to go to Paris alone and make a fresh start. As Jenny takes comfort in her music, Don returns home to find Nina has changed the locks; he is all alone.
