'Red Letter Day: Part I'

Jimmi and Daniel wind Melody up over her impending exam results but she’s in no mood for their banter. She nervously asks Karen to keep the results envelope for the time being as she’s not ready to open it.

Julia receives a phone call from Cybil Lambert, who tells Julia what a wonderful doctor Daniel is and then hangs up, leaving Julia stunned. However, later Daniel receives a worrying phone call from Cybil but when he rushes out to treat her, he discovers that she just wanted Daniel’s company. His initial anger subsides as he sits down to take tea with Cybil and they indulge in some harmless banter. Malcolm arrives unnoticed and listens to his mother and Daniel.

Daniel is concerned when Cybil has a flash of pain but she plays it down and changes the subject; handing him a present of gold cuff-links that belonged to her late husband as means of thank you for his kind company. He is pleased and quite touched but his mood is ruined when on departure meets Malcolm who questions Daniel’s motives.

Meanwhile, Terry Kent (31) registers the heavily pregnant Kim Longstaff (23) as an emergency patient and takes her for a check up with Melody. Melody’s concerned to find track marks on Kim’s arm but although Kim denies she’s still using, she’s very cagey about the pregnancy, arousing Melody’s suspicions.

Melody checks the temporary address given by Terry and is perturbed to find that it doesn’t exist. She informs WPC Vicky Hilton of the fake name and address, and she starts to investigate. Meanwhile Heston tells Melody that he knows about the job offer and has written her a good reference.

Melody is shocked that Heston would support her but he has the utmost faith in her capabilities. However, she still can’t be persuaded to open her exam results. Terry leaves a pained Kim back at the house with the other pregnant resident Alicia (17).

Alicia questions whether Kim really wants to give up her child but Kim is resolute; they should take the money and forget it. The discussion is interrupted when Kim cries out that her waters have broken. Although Alicia warns Kim that Terry doesn’t want anyone external involved, the pain is too much and Kim calls for help whilst Alicia calls Terry to come back.

Melody enjoys her shift at the co-op when she meets her dishy co-worker, Etienne (28) but the flirting is cut short when she starts to make the rounds. Melody is taken by the co-op driver Frank to Kim’s house and attempts to pacify her. Kim is desperate to go to hospital but Alicia warns her against it and tells her she won’t get paid if she leaves the house. The conversation is cut short when Terry arrives back.

Melody tries to call an ambulance and the police but he snatches the phone and threatens her to get on with it here and now.

As Melody tries to deliver Kim’s baby, Alicia reveals her contractions have started too. Melody attempts to persuade Terry to let them go to hospital, saying that Frank will have called for help, but she realises Terry has already dealt with Frank, and that she’s trapped...
