Meanwhile, his constant complaining annoys Karen who says she'd rather be at work. Rob looses his temper and says its only a job, but Karen says it's the first thing she's had that has been entirely hers since she had the kids.
Rob feels ashamed and opens up. He's glad she's found something she loves, but he's felt bored since he returned from London. He proceeds, gently, to tell her there may be an opening in the firearms department and he'd like to go for it. This is the last thing Karen wants and its written all over her horrified face.
Cerys "casually" drops in to the surgery to ask Jimmi if he'd like to go out with her that night. Jimmi is mid conversation with Daniel, and mutters something about promising Daniel a pint. An astonished Daniel backs up Jimmi's story, and Cerys is disappointed. Daniel is gobsmacked, but Jimmi tries to explain he's just not ready, it seems too soon after Eva. Simon, catching the end of this, wades in with how long it usually takes him to get over a significant bereavement.
Jimmi snaps that its different for him, and storms off. Julia witnesses this from afar, and later approaches Jimmi on a pretext and asks if he's okay. She's understanding, but firm. If Jimmi likes Cerys he has to seize the opportunity, his life can't stop just because Eva is no longer a part of it.
Jimmi doesn't want to betray Eva's memory, but Julia convinces him he can go on a date without feeling guilty. No one will judge him. Jimmi feels liberated by her advice, and goes down to the radio studio with a bunch of flowers, which Cerys thanks him for with a big kiss.
Meanwhile, Ray MacGyver (47) stumbles into daylight after a night in the cells for fighting. He's having trouble coping with the fact that his wife Brenda (43) has terminal cancer. Zara calls to see Brenda at the caravan park where they live, to find she's decided to end her treatment. She only has a short time left, so wants to spend it with her six children and Ray without the various side effects. But she doesn't want Ray knowing – he's finding it tough enough already.
Zara's job is made harder by the arrival of daughter Carly (19), who is heavily pregnant. Carly's relationship with her father is being stretched to breaking point by Ray's attitude to his daughter's boyfriend Everton, who is black, and who he has yet to be introduced to. Carly knows about her mother's decision, and is determined to get Zara to change her mother's mind.
They're mid argument when Ray walks in, and demands to know what's happening. On finding out, Ray is furious at both Brenda and Carly and storms out of the caravan, and it falls to Zara to talk to him. Finding him fishing at the pond Zara explains the need for Ray to support Brenda, and let her die with peace of mind, gradually winning him round. Ray returns to the caravan, where the family show the true strength of their bond, and reconcile.
