However, when it comes to the crunch Rob deliberately misses the target and Luke wins the place. Karen is overjoyed at the news but it’s evident that Rob has sacrificed his own desires for the family.
Michelle returns to work at The Mill after taking time off to address her alcohol issues and attempts to hold it together. She encounters a compassionate Julia but Ruth is not so welcoming.
Things seem to be on the up as Cherry provides unwavering support but at the end of the day Michelle can’t resist and whilst alone, succumbs to the vodka bottle.
Meanwhile, Martin (52) despairs of his ageing father Kenneth (75) who insists that he will still perform his last act as the world’s oldest escapologist, ‘The Great Howdini.’
Heston gives Kenneth the once over before he performs his final show but warns that his age, combined with the physical nature of the show could be dangerous but Kenneth won’t listen; the show must go on. He asks if Heston will come to watch, but Heston is reluctant. However, Martin lays on the guilt and plants the seed in Heston’s mind. It’s a bit of a disappointing turn out, but Kenneth perks up when Andrea Nelson (25) from the ‘Letherbridge News’ asks for an interview.
Martin is distracted by a pretty girl in the crowd – Nicola. Heston arrives in time to witness Kenneth’s attempt go drastically wrong and he has to be rescued by Heston and taken to hospital. Kenneth accuses Martin of sabotaging his attempts and reveals he knows about the ‘woman.’
A shaken Martin admits to Heston that he did tie the straps too tightly but didn’t mean it to go so far. He still lives at home to keep an eye on his father but met Nicola on a dating website. He knew Kenneth would be terrified of being left alone so he kept her quiet but his father must have found out.
After Martin’s outburst a concerned Heston questions his physical state and suggests that he may need to be tested for Parkinson’s, prompting Martin to realise that he needs to make amends with his father. They manage to salvage their relationship and come to an agreement; Nicola can stay over and Kenneth will give up the stunts.
