'In The Cold Hard Light of Day'

Ruth deals with an awkward patient with Michelle's help. Heston makes matters worse but is under the impression Ruth needs to learn how to be assertive. Right on cue Simon finds a leaflet on an assertiveness course.

Heston insists Ruth goes on it and he'll go on it with her. Ruth is adamant she doesn't need it until Lily points out she does struggle to stand up to Heston. Karen tries to cheer up Jack but he hides under his covers all day moping.

Finally, Immie stomps in and tells him to get a grip; he can still go to university if he goes through clearing. Jack emerges and looks at the website. When Jack comes downstairs full of hope that he'll get a place through clearing Karen believes just the smell of her cooking has done wonders, unaware of Immie's contribution.

Meanwhile, Brigit (37) wakes up next to her husband Leo (35), whose hands are roaming her body. Brigit makes the excuse that she has to be in work early for 'retraining'. At work Brigit lightly flirts with colleague Raj (33) as he teases her about her recent lack of alcohol consumption.

When she leaves for the doctors she avoids Raj's questions, claiming she's just out of sorts. After she's left Leo calls the office and asks Raj about the 'retraining', Raj has no idea what he's talking about but covers, claiming that it got cancelled and Brigit is in a meeting. Leo's suspicions are aroused.

At the Mill, Zara reveals that Brigit is eight weeks pregnant. Brigit immediately asks for a termination. She claims she has been binge drinking and thinks she has harmed the baby. Zara asks Brigit to let her do some research on drinking during pregnancy before they do anything rash. Brigit reluctantly agrees.

Later, Brigit sits alone on a bench, sobbing. She calls Leo and leaves a message arranging to meet him for lunch. Brigit waits at the Icon, nervous. When she finally sees Leo approaching she panics and runs off. Leo doesn't see her, so picks up his phone to call her.

He turns up at Brigit's work and questions Raj as to her whereabouts and accuses him of having an affair with Brigit. Raj swears not and reluctantly reveals she went to the doctors earlier, he lied because he didn't want to ruin the surprise. Leo looks blank and Raj explains he thinks she's pregnant. Stunned, Leo storms out of building.

Brigit goes back to see Zara, listening to the research about drinking during pregnancy, when she shouts at Zara to stop. She's been dishonest with her and she wants a termination because the baby isn't her husband's.

At that moment, Leo storms in demanding to know who the father is. Brigit admits she doesn't know - it was a one night stand in Milan. She slept with him to get pregnant because Leo is infertile and he doesn't want a donor who would have a right to contact the child. Leo is devastated.

Brigit apologises and says she wants a termination, and Zara advises them to talk. The couple leave and sit in the car. Leo tears up the referral for a termination and smiles at his wife, sadly.
