Cath and Tony are beaming at the thought of their son attending medical school in London and Tony is taking on extra work in the hope of supporting his son through it.
Harry's recent ex-girlfriend Laura (17) comes to the Mill to see Lily as she has fallen pregnant. Laura explains that the couple broke up because they knew that they would have pressure concerning their A-Levels and eventually end up in different universities. Laura realises that a baby may change everything and will not rush into a termination; she needs to talk to Harry first.
Heston goes to give Eric, Harry's granddad, a home visit to check his breathing condition. Eric is extremely proud of his grandson and has very different plans for him than his parents: Eric has been planning a gap year for Harry and has bought an expensive round-the-world airline ticket. Heston, however, is more concerned about Eric's health as he is not exercising, and has failed to quit smoking. Eric is focusing more on his grandson's future than what is left on his own.
While Daniel and Harry are skiving from the real world, Daniel senses the pressure that Harry is feeling. Harry is unsure what he is doing and feels put upon by everyone else's plans for him. Harry opens up to Daniel about his parents' and granddad's plans and how he feels about Laura; Daniel feels out of his depth and doesn't know what to do. Daniel in the end urges Harry to do what makes him happy rather than to try and please everyone. This answer satisfies Harry and as they part invites Daniel to his county cricket final, musing about asking Laura.
Harry then visits Eric and is furious to see that he is still smoking. Harry tells Eric to use the airline ticket himself and to start caring about his own life rather than interfering with Harry's. A newly-empowered Harry has a similar conversation with his parents as he gathers his cricket whites. He suggests maybe he can go to medical school a year later so his parents don't have to take on quite so much extra work now.
Laura has been unable to reach Harry all day and requires an ultrasound as she starts bleeding. Lily takes her to hospital and as a result Harry and Laura are further delayed in contacting each other. On their separate ways to the cricket ground, Daniel and Harry start racing. As Harry arrives at the cricket ground his bike hits a bump in the road and has an accident.
When Daniel arrives, he quickly rushes to Harry and calls an ambulance as he suspects spinal injury. When Harry's parents arrive at the hospital, Daniel explains how there is a possibility that Harry's damaged spine may mean that their son will never be able to walk again. Cath immediately phones Laura, who is already at the hospital and has just had her miscarriage confirmed. Cath is stricken as she could have possibly stopped Harry from going to the game and now she may have lost her chance of having any grandchildren.
As the young couple are reunited, Daniel rings Eric to inform him what has happened to Harry. Daniel has been filled with guilt as he feels responsible for urging Harry to race and feels undeserved of the boy's admiration. Eric is shocked by the news, but the accident fills him with a new lease for life as he thinks of his grandson's words - throwing his cigarettes aside and prepares to go outside for the first time in ages.
