The actor - best known for playing detective Stuart Fraser on STV's police drama - has secured the part of Shieldinch newcomer Nick Morrison.
Nick is a politician and friend of the Brodie family who will make his first appearance on screen towards the end of January.
Speaking of his new role, McCredie commented: "I am delighted to be a part of River City. It will be quite strange as I have come across most of the cast on Taggart, either as dead bodies or murderers.
"My character Nick is a prospective MSP who comes to Shieldinch and ruffles a few feathers on the way. I am looking forward to seeing what happens to him over the next few months."
Meanwhile, River City's executive producer Gaynor Holmes added: "Colin is an enormously popular actor and we're absolutely delighted to be welcoming him to River City. We have a fantastic cast and brilliant upcoming stories."
McCredie was axed from Taggart last December after 15 years with the show.
