Billed by the BBC as a 'studious witty whizz kid', Rainsford's character has an on-screen brother called Caleb who viewers will also be introduced to.

Caleb, played by Richard Winsor, is described as a "pure adrenaline junkie" and both characters will have a big impact on the emergency department.

Casualty executive producer Oliver Kent said: "The arrival of Ethan and Caleb will instantly change the dynamic of the ED.

"Whilst very different characters, one thing they will have in common is an ability to charm, so expect sparks to fly. We can't wait to start filming and are thrilled to have George and Richard join the team."

Casualty will air Ethan and Caleb's first scenes next year.
