Casualty's Amanda Mealing: 'I nearly turned down Connie return'

By
Former Holby City star Amanda Mealing has revealed that she nearly turned down the chance to join Casualty.

The actress is reprising her role as Connie Beauchamp on the BBC One medical drama, having previously played the character on Casualty's sister show Holby City for six years.

Mealing said to Inside Soap: "I love Connie so was really sad to leave her behind in 2010 - but I had been working away from home for six-and-a-half years, and missed my children.

"When I first got the call from Casualty, I didn't think it was something I could do. The idea of being away from the family again was just too much.

"Then my husband suggested that we should all move to Cardiff together and make it an adventure - and I was over the moon. There was still so much with Connie and so many stories to tell. This has turned out to be the best thing ever."

Speaking about the reasons behind Connie's return to the hospital, Mealing said: "She realised she quite enjoyed the fight. And what bigger and better challenge than battling to revolutionise the ED?

"So she comes in with her personal agenda of just seeing how everything works, and then making a bid for leadership.

"She's on a mission to take over, and she doesn't care whose toes she has to step on to do it."

Casualty airs Connie's arrival on Saturday (March 29) at 9.10pm on BBC One.
