Redmond: Why 'Casualty' rivals 'ER'

Casualty star James Redmond has told why the show thoroughly deserved its BAFTA - and why it rivals US medical dramas.

The series beat both EastEnders and Coronation Street to win Best Continuing Drama at the awards on Sunday night for the first time.

Redmond, who plays John “Abs” Denham, told The Sun why the recognition was due.

"Soaps such as Coronation Street are great, but Casualty has a brilliant mix of elements which keep viewers hooked.

"In recent years I feel we have caught up with some of the US medical dramas which before had been a decade ahead. The scriptwriters have well and truly brought Casualty into the 21st Century."

Redmond continued: "Slick American medical dramas like ER became very popular in the Nineties. But Casualty is the second-longest-running medical drama in the world.

"The people behind ER even came to shadow the Casualty team before they began making their programme in the States. I think they were surprised by how cheaply and quickly we were able to make the programme.

"We shoot 48 episodes a year on the kind of budget that some producers get for a one or two-part drama."
