Rakie Ayola

Digital Spy caught up with Rakie Ayola - Holby City's Kyla Tyson - to talk about next week's major storyline involving her character's son Max, ex-husband Harvey and former love interest Justin.

Kyla's ex-husband, Harvey, turned up out of the blue. How has this affected her?
It’s thrown her. She wasn’t expecting to have to deal with him at work. Their relationship has been over the phone for a long time so it’s been difficult for her.

What's the history between the two?
They were married but they’ve been divorced a while. They had a tempestuous relationship and Kyla is very irrational which got too much for Harvey. Harvey brings out the worst in Kyla and she just ends up yelling at him. It’s a very difficult and if he knew how to handle her maybe it could work out but he doesn’t.

Would you be able to cope in Kyla's position?
No, I think I would cope as badly as she does! I’d like to think that if I ever found myself in that position I wouldn’t fight with my ex but I do think it would be difficult to juggle work and child care as she does.

What are the similarities and differences between yourself and Kyla?
I share all of her characteristics to a greater or lesser degree. I don’t fall for the wrong kind of men like she does and I don’t smoke but, to a greater or lesser degree, we are both very similar!

Kyla and Justin start to worry about Max when they think he's gay. How does this affect their relationship? Does it being them closer together?
Justin speaks to Max for Kyla which is good but then the way he deals with it is wrong and not what she had in mind...

How does Kyla feel about her and Justin working in the same hospital?
When he first walked in she felt cornered, she wasn’t expecting her past to walk in and it was uncomfortable to see him dating Donna.

Kyla's been in a relationship with Justin. Things start to go wrong when Justin goes AWOL with Max. What happens and how does Kyla cope with the situation?
They’ve already split by this point and she’s not speaking to him but she is desperate for someone to look after Max so she reluctantly lets Justin take him.

She goes insane when Max is missing because of his diabetes and he is meant to have his insulin and he hasn’t eaten. She feels so guilty as she knows how irresponsible Justin is and she has let him look after Max again. She is calm on the outside but hysterical inside.

What was it like working with Ben Richards?
Ben is a sweetheart! Such a lovely man, very friendly to everyone and I really missed him when he left, I got upset!

What does the future have in store for Kyla? Is there a long custody battle ahead?
They try family liaison and they try counselling first to sort out their differences but this doesn’t work so they try to work it out themselves. She has a long, expensive, stressful battle ahead…

You've been in Holby since February. How much have you enjoyed working on the series so far?
I’ve had a great time! I still cant believe I’ve been there this long. It's gone so quickly. Sometimes I still feel new as if there’s still so much to learn but all the pressure makes it fun.

Do you see Kyla becoming romantically involved with anyone else?
I don’t think Kyla copes very well on her own so I think it’s inevitable she gets involved with someone else...

Who do you get on most with from the cast?
I’ve spent most of my time with Jaye Jacobs and Sharon D Clarke so I’ve got to know them the best and they are two wonderful people but it's always lovely to work with the rest of the cast as everyone is so nice.

Who's your favourite character and why?
Joseph because I’m interested to know how he will deal with his OCD, I think the storyline is so interesting.

What's been the funniest thing to happen to you on set?
It was kind of funny when Thor, who plays Max, was being sick and watching him drink the vegetable soup was hilarious as he hated it so much! Also Jaye is hysterical on set, we love winding her up!

What would you like to see happen to Kyla in the long run?
Most of all I’d like to see her laugh, big belly laughs as she has not done much of that! Then I’d really like for her to work things out with Harvey so Max can see both his parents without them fighting. I also would like her to find a man that she is with not just because he is attractive but someone who can work her out and understand her.
