Laila Rouass has revealed that she would like to witness a real-life operation as part of her ongoing Holby City research.

The actress made her debut on the BBC medical drama last week, appearing as brilliant surgeon Sahira Shah, who is expected to be a prominent character in the months ahead.

Discussing her preparation for the part, Rouass told This Morning: "I went to The Heart Hospital in Marylebone and I spent a day there, but I want to see a real operation, which I haven't had the chance to see yet. If you've got the opportunity to do it, why not?"

Asked if she ever gets squeamish, the star replied: "I think now, after I've been on this, not so much. We do [operation scenes] all the time - we have a proper operating theatre and it's all prosthetics and it's just amazing.

"You have doctors on set and they tell you what's behind this, or what's behind that, or how this works - and it's fascinating."

Holby City continues tonight at 8pm on BBC One.
