Bergin praises supportive 'Enders cast

BBC Pictures

EastEnders newcomer Liam Bergin has expressed gratitude for the warm welcome he has received from the soap's cast in recent weeks.

The actor has been playing Archie Mitchell's secret son Danny since November and will be seen on screen for the first time next week.

Speaking to DS about fitting in with his co-stars, Bergin revealed: "The women have been protecting me and really looking after me and guys have become really good friends. Barbara [Windsor], Sam [Womack] and Rita [Simons] are always making sure I'm okay."

On having Womack and Simons as screen sisters, he commented: "It's mad! Rita's really full-on! We were in make-up yesterday and they'd just finished with me, so I was allowed to leave but because they're so funny, I just stayed in there with them. Because they've known each other for so long, they really are like sisters. I already feel really welcome, but it'd be great if I fall into that in a few months' time."

Bergin also said that he found it "absolutely brilliant" to work with Glynis Barber, who is currently on screen in the role of Danny's mother Glenda.

He said: "She really did help me a lot and gave me tons of tips about learning lines. We're not sure if she's coming back yet or not, but she's one of those characters that could easily return."
