Preeya Kalidas quits 'EastEnders'
EastEnders actress Preeya Kalidas has quit the soap after nearly a year in order to pursue a pop career.

The 29-year-old - who first appeared on screen in May 2009 as glamorous beautician turned caterer Amira Shah - will reportedly bow out of the show in the summer to release her first solo single, which is currently being recorded.

On New Year's Day, 11.6m viewers tuned in to see her character marry husband Syed (Marc Elliott) in a traditional Muslim ceremony, completely unaware of his gay affair with friend and colleague Christian Clarke (John Partridge).

Upon Amira and Syed's return from honeymoon, talk will turn to their starting a family together.

An EastEnders spokesperson this morning confirmed to DS: "Preeya will be leaving EastEnders later this year but we will not comment on future storylines as we don't want to spoil the surprise for viewers."

A Walford source added: "Preeya's exit is currently being planned and it's bound to be explosive, but what's not known is if she'll be leaving Albert Square alone - or with Syed."

Kalidas joined the Walford serial in February last year and has appeared in 64 episodes. Get the Inside Soap magazine on your iPhone or iPad
