'EastEnders' Moments: Wellard's Death

There wasn't a dry eye across Britain when EastEnders' longest-serving canine Wellard made his Walford exit during an emotional Jackson-centric episode on August 15, 2008.

Bianca was forced to race Wellard to the vets when he suddenly fell ill but she wasn't prepared for the news that he would have to be put to sleep.

Knowing that the children would never forgive her if they weren't able to say their goodbyes, Bianca returned home with Wellard who lay motionless in the front room of Pat's house by an electric fire. While reminiscing about the good times they all shared with him, Tiffany observed: "I think he needs to sleep, mum."

Bianca struggled to fight the tears, while a touching conversation about Wellard ensued between Ricky and the children. Once Douglas the vet arrived, Liam and Tiffany hugged Wellard and said their final farewells.

Bianca and Ricky stayed with their canine companion as the vet euthanised him and East 17's 'Stay' played over Wellard's last moments in the soap.
