After months of trying to tell Ronnie who she was, Danielle's final attempts were thwarted by her grandfather Archie when he insisted that Ronnie knew exactly who she was but didn't want to know her.
Ronnie finally learned the truth on her father's wedding day to Peggy when she discovered Danielle's locket in a champagne glass at their reception. As Ronnie had refused to believe her daughter's claims, Danielle left The Vic and intended to flee Walford for good.
Realising her mistake, Ronnie rushed to find her daughter and eventually tracked her down outside the tube station. However, only seconds after Ronnie accepted that she was staring at her estranged daughter, Janine accidentally mowed Danielle down with her car and Danielle tragically died in Ronnie's arms.
The hour-long Simon Ashdown-penned episode was seen by an average of 10.6m and caused a surge at the National Grid that was more than double the average for the time of day.
A number of viewers, however, were aggrieved by the plot twist and while some threatened to boycott the soap, others set up online petitions for a return.
Four months after her exit from the soap, Danielle obsessives arranged a shrine outside the soap's studios to commemorate actress Lauren Crace's time with the programme.
Speaking to Digital Spy in December, executive producer Diederick Santer stood by his decision to kill the character off. He said: "I knew there would be a reaction to Danielle's death - I felt it when we storylined it, when I read the script, when I went on set on the day we filmed it and when I watched the cut."
He added: "I perhaps didn't perceive that it would upset some people to the extent that it did, but I still believe it was the right outcome."
