'Enders Ian: 'Kathy return wouldn't work'

BBC Pictures

Adam Woodyatt has claimed that EastEnders producers should never decide to bring his former screen mother Kathy Beale back from the dead.

Gillian Taylforth played the role of Kathy, who was one of the Walford soap's original characters, between 1985 and 2000. Despite frequent rumours that she could eventually return to the part, Kathy was killed in an off-screen road accident in early 2006.

In an interview with DS, Woodyatt confirmed that while Taylforth is one of his dream returns, he knows it would not be a good idea as her comeback would require an implausible storyline.

The actor - who plays Ian Beale - explained: "There are too many reasons to want Gilly back. She's just such a wonderful woman. I'd have her back in a heartbeat but it'd never work.

"I've read things on the forums about Kathy being in witness protection and faked her death - yeah, do you really want to destroy the credibility of the programme?! It was plausible with Den, but not with Kathy!"

Taylforth recently revealed that she feared EastEnders would fail when she joined the soap in 1985.
