Santer: 'Stacey was always the killer'

Diederick Santer

EastEnders' executive producer Diederick Santer has revealed that the soap's team always intended to reveal Stacey Branning as the killer of Archie Mitchell.

Speaking after Stacey's live confession tonight, Santer confirmed that he was never tempted to go ahead with a different conclusion to the show's murder mystery.

Stacey was today seen confessing her crime to former lover Max (Jake Wood) after husband Bradley (Charlie Clements) fell to his death while being chased by police investigating the Archie case.

Discussing the plot twist on EastEnders Live: The Aftermath, Santer explained: "It was always really the story. In our heads from the beginning, it was always [Stacey]. In our heads it was always, 'Who killed Archie? Stacey'. It feels strange to even say it out loud!

"In our heads, that was always it, and while we had brilliant motives for six, eight, ten - possibly more - characters, it was always her."

Santer also discussed how the cast managed to film forthcoming episodes without knowing the solution to the mystery.

He said: "Watch it on Monday. What's quite interesting is that we're getting the characters to play sort of dual motivations. I think it will all make sense as the episodes progress."
