Bosses at the BBC One soap have reportedly told Chris Parker, who played Spencer from 2002 to 2005, that they are keen to have him back on screen.
Audience reaction to the planned return of Alfie (Shane Ritchie) and his wife Kat, played by Jessie Wallace, will be gauged later this year before a decision is made, reports the Sunday Mirror.
The source said: "Spencer is the final link in the Moon family tree. Everyone knows how loyal Alfie is to him so if one brother is coming back to Walford, it would be natural for the other to follow."
Spencer was sent away from Albert Square after he was caught breaking into Pauline Fowler's house to retrieve a hidden stash of drugs. After spending New Year's Eve in prison, Alfie sent him to live with their cousin Maxwell in Australia.
The 2005 exit storyline was created by scriptwriters after a failed suicide bid by the young star led to his decision to leave.
