BBC soap EastEnders was triumphant at the British Academy Television Awards last night, pulling off its first victory in four years.

The Walford serial was named the UK's best 'Continuing Drama' at the London Palladium event, beating off competition from rivals Coronation Street, Casualty and The Bill.

EastEnders' cast members were led by Albert Square legend Barbara Windsor (Peggy Mitchell) as they accepted the prize. They were also joined by Diederick Santer, who was the programme's executive producer throughout the awards' eligibility period of January 2009 to February 2010.

Speaking of the victory, Santer commented: "Receiving this on our 25th year is the icing on the cake in what's been a fantastic year for us."

Since the BBC show's last BAFTA triumph in 2006, the 'Continuing Drama' gong has been awarded to Casualty in 2007, Holby City in 2008 and The Bill last year.

EastEnders also had an impressive night at the British Soap Awards last month, taking home the 'Best Soap' trophy along with nine other prizes.
