Barbara Windsor has admitted that she asked EastEnders bosses not to kill off Peggy Mitchell - even though she has no intentions of ever returning.

Speaking to Piers Morgan as she filmed an appearance on his Life Stories series, Windsor, who made her final appearance earlier this month, said that it was "selfish" of her to make the request.

"It was a bit selfish of me but I didn't want to be killed off," she said. "I am never going to go back but I like to think that she's still out there somewhere."

The 73 year-old confessed that her husband Scott had helped her make the decision to quit the BBC soap.

"Scott said I wasn't switching off," she said. "I was Peggy 24 hours a day. It was taking over my life."

She added. "It was so hard; we were all great friends. I love that show, and I miss the camaraderie."

Windsor's full interview with Morgan will be shown on ITV1 on October 9. Get the Inside Soap magazine on your iPhone or iPad
