The actress, who played Tiffany Mitchell until she died on New Year's Eve in 1998, told RTÉ Ten that she would have liked the door to have been left open for a return at some stage.
"It does make me sad," she said. "Because I loved the character so much, as did the public and it was a shame that they didn't leave the door open for me to come back."
However, she confessed that she did not regret her exit from the BBC soap, adding: "It was also a blessing in disguise because otherwise I may not have had number ones, or kissed Hugh Grant! I can't really be angry with how things have gone in my career. I could still be in EastEnders wondering, what if, what if."
The 34-year-old also claimed that soap actors do not get "the credit they deserve".
"Working on EastEnders was the hardest thing I've ever done," she said. "If you can keep up with the schedule when you've got a big storyline you can do anything!"
